Typographic portrait:

For this assignment we had to make a portrait of ourselves using words only to make out our picture. I used photobooth to take a photo of myself then opened it in photoshop and used the application to make the portrait we could use any lettering we wanted but i decided to use only my name throughout the image. I  think this worked well as it persoalised the image somewhat aswell as adding fluidity to the image as it all looked similar. I tried not to use many lines in the image but to use as muc shading as ossible which i think worked well and resembles me more than i expected it to. I used different sized lettering and different colour lettering to portray shading and the different features in the image.

we also had to make a quick hand drawn sketch of ourselves which i struggled with as my art is in no way shape or form good by any standards. however the idea behind it was not to be a good artist but to interpret the lines of our features and put them on paper to show that we understood the way our face is constructed and put it in a simple form which i think came out kind of okay in the end!

I was still sick this week so couldn’t get much done and unfortunately ended up having to hand in the assignment late but I at least finally got the hang of photoshop and finally became much more familiar with its userface and as a result am now far more confident in using the prgramme

this week we bgan work on our semiotics collage. I was still fairly unfamilar and unsure with semiotics at this stage and was taking me ages to get anything done. I was also sick which meant I could not get into college to use the mac labs to get this assignment done on time so for this week i basically brainstormed on which celebrity to choose for my work and what sort of ideas to incorporate into my collage

this week we learned a lot in the area of semiotics and how it is used to illustrate or give meaning to certain things. We looked at various examples of this at work through companies logo’s and advertising. we then looked at design principles like positive and negative space etc to learn how to emphasize certain things or make something more dominant in an image we also looked at the subjects of balance and contrast to further enhance our imagery skills coming into our semiotics assignment aswell as movement and emphasis

this week was our field trip to the museum of modern art. It was a joined trip between visual language and digital photography and so had a dual purpose. Firstly we got to go inside and see the many modern works and pieces that were on display. We had a look around for the first half taking in the modern art and then picked three pieces that appealed to us we then took a quick sketch of these pieces and described what they meant to us:

first sketch: This image is called “hate-love” by Isaac Julen. I like this image because of it is a very appropriate image of real life. This hate love relationship is everywhere in the world today and is a very modern message. It comprises of two complete opposites that are inadvertantly linked to each other. I really like the way the message was conveyed on two knuckle dusters as it conveys the message of relationships that people may have with each other. The message has become synonymous with gang culture in relation to drugs as gang members love the money they can accumulate however hate what it does to people and the trouble they can get in. Also being in a gang can really have significant meaning to people which they love but when they end up in jail they hate the lack of freedom and seeing their loved ones. And i think that this is what Isaac is trying to portray in this image

second sketch: This image is called “screenprint” and was created by Michael Craig-Martin. I really like this image because of its simplicity and the fact that it is designed to look like a very simple blueprint. It immediately caught my eye as it was so different to all the other pieces on display. It comprises of four very simple blue prints on top of one another a mobile phone, a light bulb, a can and a jar. The outlines are different colours for each item and the simplicity and cleaness of the image just really appealed to me. I really liked the minimalist look of the image aswell as the blue background to suggest that it was a blueprint

third image The image is entitle “untitled” and was created by Jack Pierson. Again this image really appealed to me because of it minimalist simplistic approach to art that conveys a message. It uses the simplist of colouring just black and white which really makes the message stand out. It uses the old movie theatre lettering for its letters and conveys a confused message it contains the comparisons or opposites of dinner, breakfast and fear, hope. To me it conveys mixed messages but one of an optimistic nature, the dinner breakfast message conveys to me that tomorrow is a new day and the fear hope message shows me that no matter how fearful or bad a situation there may be there is still hope. I really like this image because it forces you to think and ponder the message

The second half of the day was spent roaming the grounds with the nikon d60′s capturing as many images as we could aswell as trying to imply our newly aquired  knowledge of how to use the aperature and shutter speed settings on the cameras. All in all i found the day to be a great success learning much about modern art aswell as gaining some valuable practice on the dslr cameras

We then looked at photoshop as a programme and got a basic introduction and understanding of howit wors and how to use it. We also looked at who would use it and discovered its usefulness in the business world for example how many industry magazines use this programme to illustrate their magazines as best as possible

This week in visual language we worked on photoshop getting a basic grasp of how to use it for our upcoming assignment. We learned all the basic functions and how to use them to manipulate a photo. We learned to save them in such a way that it can be uploaded to the net as the only programme that can understand .psd formats is photoshop and would therefore not work on the internet. Therefore we changed the format to jpeg and uploaded them to our blogpotato man

We also discussed our next assignment which will be done in photoshop with a celebrity being illustrated in three different ways
